Portraits, Events & Speakers

“Until the lion learns how to write, every story will glorify the hunter.”

This quote is a guiding principle at the African American Cultural Center at NC State University, and never was it more apparent than when I began looking for visual representation of diverse students and populations for my marketing and communications work with the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity. Upon my arrival in 2012, I immediately noticed a lack of representation of the students I needed to highlight, and as a freelance professional photographer I began building a library of images for our unit to use.

Today, over ten years later, the gallery which I built is one of the most comprehensive collections of diverse student life at the university. Our unit has often been asked to share photography from historical events, notable speakers, and general student life which are not found in the university’s own image collections.

Images from my collections have been entered into the NC State Libraries historical archives for reference purposes for those who seek photography of the experiences of diverse and multicultural students, faculty and staff on campus. Along the way, I have employed and mentored students interested in photography, as well as photographed student models for exhibition shows with the African American Cultural Center and Women’s Center.
